Faces in the Crowd
Jackie Robinson
PASADENA, CALIF.
Robinson, a freshman at Pasadena Junior College, broad-jumped 25'6½" to break the junior college record held by his brother Mack. Jackie then changed uniforms and, arriving in the third inning, played shortstop as the Pasadena J.C. baseball team beat Glendale 5-3 to win the 1938 Pacific Coast Conference championship.
Thomas Selleck
SHERMAN OAKS, CALIF.
Tom, a 12-year-old pitcher and shortstop, led the Squirt Chiefs to the 1957 Sherman Oaks Frontier Little League championship. A few days later he hit a home run and was the losing pitcher in the league's all-star game. Tom previously played on the Woody Woodpeckers and says he hopes to become a professional baseball player.
Lynn Nolan Ryan Jr.
ALVIN, TEXAS
Nolan, 11, was named to the 1958 Alvin Little League All-Star team. Primarily a shortstop and an outfielder, the skinny sixth-grader is also occasionally called upon to pitch. Despite control problems, Nolan, who developed his arm tossing rocks at snakes and turtles, threw a no-hitter for the Alvin VFW Rangers this season.
Lewis Alcindor Jr.
THE BRONX, N.Y.
Lewis, 8, won the 1955 Best Athlete Award at St. Jude's Day Camp after hitting a Softball farther and running faster than anyone in his age group. Lewis, whose favorite sport is baseball, is an avid Brooklyn Dodger Ian and has hopes of one day pitching for the Bums. In the meantime he is looking forward to joining Little League.
Margaret Unnewehr
CINCINNATI
Margie, a junior, led her Academy of the Sacred Heart field hockey team to a crucial win at Sacred Heart of St. Louis. The trip to Missouri cost Margie a chance to see her beloved Reds at Crosley Field, but her sacrifice was an example of the spirit that earned her the 1945 Field Day trophy for leadership.
Mario Cuomo
QUEENS, N.Y.
Cuomo, a strong-armed freshman centerfielder at St. John's, hit .286 on the season and then accepted a $2,000 signing bonus from the Pittsburgh Pirates. "Mario has a fine arm as well as a good eye for the ball," says freshman baseball coach Lou Carnesseca. Cuomo plans to begin his pro career in 1952, after his junior year.
