Elizabeth Bourland
WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS
Bourland, 30, trailing by a point before the final round, fired a 10.5 (10.9 is perfect) to a 9.2 for Ann-Marie Pfiffner of Dubuque, Iowa, to win the women's air rifle title at the U.S. International Rifle and Pistol Championship. She then defeated Tammie DeAngelis of Kansas City, Mo., by a point to win the women's three-position rifle competition.
Marlon Price
NEWTON, N.C.
Marlon, a senior wide receiver at Fred T. Foard High, caught five passes in his first varsity game for a total of 228 yards, including touchdowns of 38, 60, 55 and 43 yards, as the Tigers won their season opener 52-46 against Claremont Bunker Hill High. He had not played football the past two years because of tendinitis in his knee.
Craig Hummer
SANTA MONICA, CALIF.
Hummer, 28, a lifeguard, won all eight events he entered at the U.S. Lifesaving Association National Championships and led Los Angeles County to its seventh consecutive team title. He broke his own record of seven individual wins, set last year, and his total of 72 points would have placed him sixth in the team competition.
Jacqueline Simonsen
ST. ALBANS BAY, VT.
Simonsen, 32, a strength and conditioning coach, set five world records in the women's 143-pound class at the All-Around World Weightlifting Championships with an 805-pound hand-and-thigh lift, a 350 straddle deadlift, a 187 lefthand deadlift, a 188 unassisted squat and a 165 in the clean and jerk. She holds 18 world and 27 U.S. marks.
John Harris
EDINA, MINN.
Harris, 41, an insurance executive, defeated Danny Ellis of Haines City, Fla., 5 and 3 to win the U.S. amateur golf championship. He received putting advice during the final day from his caddie, son Chris, 15, which solidified his victory. Harris was a member of the 1974 NCAA champion ice hockey team from Minnesota.
Justin Gimelstob
ESSEX FELLS, N.J.
Justin, 16, defeated Ryan Wolters of San Jose 6-3, 6-1 to win the USTA national boys' 16-and-under singles title. He also won this year's clay court 16's singles and doubles (with Rafael Jordan of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) crowns. He was the 1991 14-and-under singles and doubles champ, beating Ryan again in the final and teaming with Rafael in doubles.
