William Bell
JONESBORO, ARK.
Bell, 71, a retired pathologist, surpassed his own state pole vault record in the 70-to-74 age bracket by one inch with a vault of 9'1" at the Arkansas Senior Olympics in Hot Springs. He is the father of Earl Bell, a bronze medalist at the 1984 Olympics and holder of a former world pole vault record (18'7¼").
Shelley Ogden
CINCINNATI
Ogden, 45, an assistant manager of a health club, teamed with Geri Stoffregen to win the women's 45-and-over title at the U.S. racquetball doubles championship in Phoenix. They defeated Nidia Funes and Merijean Kelley 15-7, 15-2 in the finals. Ogden was also a finalist in the 45-and-over mixed doubles with Michael Stephens.
Nehumi Tuihalamaka
PHOENIX
Tuihalamaka, who is 26 years old and weighs 350 pounds, set a world record at the Natural Athlete Strength Association World Cup Powerlifting Championships in Dallas. Competing in the super heavyweight division (over 275 pounds), he squatted 909 pounds to break the 14-month-old mark of 906 pounds set by Shane Hamman.
Rachel Sanford
SOMERSET, KY.
Rachel, 10, a fifth-grader at Southern Elementary, became Kentucky's youngest high school state champion in any sport by winning the cross-country title at the state AAA meet. She covered the 2.5-mile course in 14:59.9. Rachel, who competes for Southwestern Pulaski High, placed in the top five in all 13 of her regular-season meets.
Todd Ingle
NAUVOO, ALA.
Todd, a senior wide receiver at Lynn High, broke the state record for career receptions (195) set in 1989 by Blaine Hathcock of Berry High in Walnut Grove. Todd, who grabbed seven passes in the game in which he broke the record, now has 229 catches, 38 for TDs. He also holds the state mark for career yardage for receivers with 3,356 yards.
Shayna Olesiuk
SOULSBYVILLE, CALIF.
Shayna, a junior placekicker for Sonora High, connected on 24 of 28 extra points to help lead the Wildcats to an 8-2 regular-season record and end up as the most accurate extra-point kicker in the Valley Oak League. In the winter Shayna is a tricaptain of the Sonora High girls' soccer team and an all-league fullback.
