Tripp Schwenk
SARASOTA, FLA.
Schwenk, a 22-year-old senior at Tennessee, won the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and was on the world-record-setting 4 X 100 medley relay team at the Short Course World Swimming Championships. He also was the 1993 NCAA champion in the 200 back.

Demetria Sance
SAN ANTONIO
Demetria, who is a six-foot junior on the John Jay High girls' volleyball team, set a national schoolgirl record for kills in a season, with 736. An All-America as an outside hitter, Demetria also led the Lady Mustangs to a 35-5 record and to the state Class 5A semifinals.

Steve Shields
NORTH BAY, ONT.
Shields, a senior goalie for Michigan's ice-hockey team, got his 89th win as a Wolverine in a 6-0 shutout of Minnesota and broke the collegiate record for career victories. As of Sunday, Shields, who was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 1991, had upped that total to 98.

Don Schaffer
ROLLA, MO.
Schaffer, 60, a retired communications engineer, broke four U.S. drug-free powerlifting records in the 60-65 age group at the 1993 Central USA Open. He set marks in the squat (451.7 pounds), bench press (424.2) and deadlift (534.5) and for total poundage (1,410.4).

Erin Davis
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.
Erin, a ninth-grader at Saratoga Springs Junior High, became the first freshman to win the national high school girls' cross-country championships. She covered the 5,000 meters in 17:11.8. In November, Erin set a course record in winning her second straight state title.

Mike Bohn
INDIANAPOLIS
Mike, a senior at Roncalli High, ran for 247 yards in the state Class 3A championship game, a 14-12 win over Northwood High. His 3,165 rushing yards this past fall broke the state single-season record of 3,024, which was set by Alex Smith of Franklin County High in 1992.
