Dotterweich, 85, set world 85-89 age-group swimming records in the 50-meter freestyle (43.86), 50 and 100 backstrokes (56.85 and 2:09.91) and 50 and 100 breaststrokes (57.53 and 2:09.33). He is also a member of the Essex County (N.J.) Bowling Hall of Fame.
Conswella Sparrow
SHELBYVILLE, TENN.
Conswella, a 6'2" junior center at Shelbyville Central High, had 20 points and 13 rebounds in a 61-31 defeat of Noxubee County (Miss.) High that snapped the Tigerettes' 54-game winning streak. She was averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds a game through Friday.
Jim Savage
HANSVILLE, WASH.
Savage, 18, riding for Team Stresstabs, beat Ryan Dahl of Leucadia, Calif., by four seconds to win the junior national cyclo-cross title for the second straight year. He is a national road-cycling B-team member and was the 1991 boys' 15-16 national champion in the criterium.
Matt DeOrio
JACKSONVILLE
Matt, a senior fullback at The Bolles School, rushed for 168 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries to lead the Bulldogs to the Class 3A state title with a 42-21 upset of No. 1-ranked Lake Wales High. Bolles ended the year 15-0, and Matt finished with 1,808 yards and 26 TDs.
Carole Thate
AMSTERDAM
Thate, a freshman midfielder, paced the nation in scoring, with 93 points, while leading James Madison to its first NCAA field hockey tournament berth. The former Dutch Olympian scored the only goal in a first-round upset of defending champion Old Dominion.
Zachary Heidepriem
ELLICOTT CITY, MD.
Zachary, 12, won the national Junior Olympics cross-country title in the 11-12 age group. In August he won the 3,000 meters, with a time of 10:08.51, and the 1,500 (4:49.50) at the track and field nationals and finished second in the 800 by .07 of a second.
