Chad Renner
BISMARCK, N.DAK.
Gutches, a sophomore 177-pounder, and Renner, a sophomore 167-pounder, led the Oregon State wrestling team to its first defeat of Arizona State in six meetings, dating back to 1979. Gutches, a three-time state high school champion and the '89 national junior titlist at 178 pounds, beat Sun Devil Pat Lynch 10-4. Renner, also a three-time state champ and the U.S.'s top junior at 163 pounds in '90, defeated Arizona State's '92 NCAA champion Markus Mollica 6-5. As of last Friday, Gutches, a German major, was 29-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation in his weight class; Renner, a business major, was 30-1 and No. 2 in his; and the Beavers were ranked No. 9.
Joyce Corrigan
CERRITOS, CALIF.
Corrigan, 49, a retired dog groomer, landed a 304.4-pound yellowfin tuna on 100-pound-test line. The catch is a pending International Game Fishing Association 130-pound line-class world record. She caught the 6'5½" fish near San Benedicto Island, 375 miles west of Manzanillo, Mexico.
Joe Pantuosco
HAMPDEN, MASS.
Puntuosco, 44, guided the Springfield Cathedral High boys' soccer team to a 23-0 record and the Division 1 state title. It was the Panthers' third state crown in his 16 years as coach. His daughters, Gina and Lynn, were on the Cathedral girls' team, which beat Framingham High 1-0 for the state title.
Tracy Reid
MIAMI
Tracy, a senior guard, had 29 points and 19 rebounds to lead Central High to a 49-47 win over Norland High, then the No. 1-ranked girls' team in the stale. She scored the Rockets' last eight points, including a game-tying layup with 40 seconds left and two decisive free throws with three seconds to go.
Michael Weiss
FAIRFAX, VA.
Michael, 17, placed first in both the technical and free programs to win the singles title at the world junior figure skating championship. Weiss, the first junior men's singles titlist from the U.S. since Todd Eldredge, in 1988, subsequently finished eighth at the Olympic trials in his first senior competition.
