Susan Harkins
EAST HAVEN, CONN.
Harkins, 33, a chemistry teacher and powerlifter, set a women's world record in the 114-to 123-pound sub-master division when she deadlifted 277½ pounds. Harkins, the 1993 National Woman Powerlifter of the Year, also benched 125 and squatted 190 at the meet in which she set her mark.
Wanda Camps
NEW YORK CITY
Wanda, a senior guard at LaGuardia High, raised her career point total to 2,458, the highest ever for girls' basketball in the city's Public School Athletic League, when she scored 30 points in a 103-53 loss to Martin Luther King High. She also holds the PSAL single-game girls' record of 77 points.
Joshua Stewart
FAIRBURN, GA.
Joshua, 11, climbed 19,340-foot Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Joshua, who is believed to be the youngest person ever to ascend Kilimanjaro, and his father, Michael, a professional guide, climbed via the Machame route, reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak.
Collinus Newsome
DENVER
Collinus, a senior at Denver South High, set a girls' national high school indoor shot put record with a throw of 52'1¾". That distance was nearly 17 inches longer than the standard Collinus had established two weeks earlier. She has signed a letter of intent with the University of Illinois.
Sarah Schmidek
JENNER, ALBERTA
Sarah, 12, the youngest athlete at the Canadian figure skating championships, won the novice women's crown against rivals as old as 17, in her first national competition. As a result of her victory she will move up to the junior level, where she will compete against skaters as old as 19.
George Taylor
EAST POLAND, MAINE
Taylor, a 41-year-old auto-body repairman, won the improved-stock C class at the Canada-U.S. snowmobile drag racing championships. His top speed in that class is 89 mph on a straight 660-foot track. Taylor also won four classes at the New Hampshire Snowmobile Racing Championships.
