Bronfeld, 26, and Levine, 24, won the men's and women's titles, respectively, in tiebreakers at the national singles racquetball championships. In a rematch of last year's final, the No. 2-ranked Bronfeld upset the defending champion, John Ellis of Stockton, Calif., 9-15, 15-8, 11-2. For Bronfeld, who shared the 1988 intercollegiate title with Ellis, it was his first national championship. In her first appearance in the final, Levine, ranked No. 3, defeated five-time champion Michelle Gould of Boise, Idaho, 9-15, 15-11, 11-9. It was Gould's first tiebreaker in the nationals since 1989 and her first loss in a final.
Ann Marsh
ROYAL OAK, MICH.
Marsh, 22, a May graduate of Columbia, took the bronze in the women's foil at the Leon Jeanty Women's Senior World Cup Fencing Tournament to become the first U.S. woman to medal in World Cup foil competition. Two weeks later Marsh won the Division I women's foil title at the U.S. nationals.
Russell Blunt
DURHAM, N.C.
Blunt, 86, coach of Hillside High's track team, guided the Hornets to the boys' title at the North Carolina 4A outdoor track and field championship. Blunt, who is believed to be the oldest active high school coach in the nation, began his coaching career at Hillside in 1955 and has amassed 16 state titles.
April Shea
BLACKWOOD, N.J.
April, 13, defeated Mary Elsass, 16, of Poquoson, Va., by one point to win the junior girls' (ages 20 and under) air rifle title at the national Junior Olympic shooting championships. She also won the girls' sub-junior (14 and under) air rifle title and the sub-junior three-position competition.
Joseph Ciccone
SKANEATELES, N.Y.
Ciccone, a freshman bowler at Erie Community College, won the all-events crown at the Nittany Lions Classic, averaging 224 over 12 games and rolling the fifth 300 game of his career. He was named Collegiate Male Bowler of the Year, the first kegler from a junior college to be so honored.
