Janet and Jenni, identical-twin sisters who recently graduated from Marinette High, led the Marines' girls' track and field team to the Division I state championship for the third straight year. Janet and Jenni, who ran the third and fourth legs, respectively, on the victorious 4X800-meter relay, also were first in three individual events: Janet in the 1,600, and Jenni in the 400 and 800. In four years Jenni won nine state titles, tying a Wisconsin record, and 114 of 119 races. Janet, a state champ in five events during her high school career, won 106 of 126 races. They were also on the girls' cross-country and basketball teams.

Stenrod, 44, a nurse, and Aragon, 34, a maintenance worker, set state records in their respective weight classes at the New Mexico powerlifting championships. Stenrod, who holds U.S. and world masters' (age 40 and over) women's marks in the squat, bench press, deadlift and total lift in two weight categories, squatted 480 pounds, bench-pressed 300 and deadlifted 445 for a total lift of 1,225 to win the 170-pound open class. Aragon, who has set four U.S. records in the squat, bench press, deadlift and total lift, squatted 350, bench-pressed 185 and deadlifted 365 for a total lift of 900 to win the 114-pound open class.

Dave, 28, a systems analyst at Columbia University, and his brother Matt, 25, a cable-television account executive, led the Rollin' Rebels to the first roller-basketball world championship. In a 61-58 victory over White Hair Man in the National Inline Basketball League final, Matt, who was voted the tournament's MVP, scored 28 points, and Dave 14. The brothers, along with White Hair Man's Jim Hill and Pat Garret, and the Tar Wheels' Tom Lagarde, a six-year NBA veteran, were named to the all-tournament team. The Phillipses have been playing roller basketball for 1½ of the league's two-year existence.
