Frank Frigo
LOUISVILLE
Frigo, 32, a natural-gas trader, outplayed a field of 600 competitors, including defending champ Jes Thompsen of Denmark in the final, to win the world backgammon title in Monte Carlo. Frigo, who began playing tournament backgammon 15 years ago, had never before entered the worlds.
Cheryl Meyer
MORRILL, KANS.
Cheryl, 15, was named overall Outstanding Wrestler at the America's Cup for Women, in Las Vegas, after winning the cadet division (girls 16 and under) at 123 pounds. At the U.S. nationals earlier this year, Cheryl earned a silver medal in the 125.5-pound class.
Erin Gilroy
HUNTINGTON, N.Y.
Erin, a recent graduate of Walt Whitman High, ended her varsity soccer career as goalie with 59 wins and a school-record 32 shutouts. After having played every minute of every game since the ninth grade, she was the only goalie to make the national soccer coaches' All-America girls' team this year.
Scott Humphries
ALAMO, CALIF.
Humphries, 18, became the first American in 13 years to win the Wimbledon junior boys' singles championship, with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Mark Philippoussis of Australia. A member of the U.S. Tennis Association's national team since 1992, Humphries has won 11 U.S. junior titles.
Ryuji Imada
TAMPA
Ryuji, 17, shot rounds of 66-68-66, which gave him a tournament-record 13-under-par 200, to win the individual title at the Northern Telecom Junior Team Challenge, in Brentwood, Ky. Ranked fifth nationally, Ryuji also won the boys' 15-to-18 division at the Taylor Made PineIsle Junior Classic.
Carl Wolter
PARRYVILLE, PA.
Carl, a recent graduate of Lehighton Area High, won the state Class 3A javelin championship with a throw of 211'5". He also placed first in the scholastic division in the javelin at the Penn Relays with a throw of 203'11". His best toss is a school-record 220'4".
