David, 10, set a national age-group swimming record in the 100-meter butterfly (1:09.39) and New Mexico records in the 50 backstroke (35.37), 100 back (1:15.81), 50 fly (35.37), 200 freestyle (2:20.83) and 200 individual medley (2:39.29) while competing in the 10-and-under division of the Western Zone Championships. He won all those events. Stephen, 12, who like his brother swims for the Santa Fe Seals, broke his own 11-and 12-year-old age-group state records in the 50 breaststroke (35.00) and 100 breast (1:15.71), placing fifth in both events, and in the 200 IM (2:27.37), in which he earned a bronze medal.

Snouffer, 38, a gymnastics coach, was the individual champion for the third time and led the five-man American team to victory at the world boomerang throwing championships. Then, at the nationals, he won his eighth straight—and his ninth overall—U.S. individual crown.

Jennifer Evans
PLANO, TEXAS
Evans, 27, a systems engineer who is usually a track cyclist, outdid a field of 50 males to win a 96-mile men's category 1-2-3 road race in Houston. She is believed to be the first woman to triumph in a men's elite field. Evans also was first in the women's sprints at the EDS Grand Prix.

Joel Kribel
PLEASANTON, CALIF.
Joel, 17, won his fourth national boys' golf title of the summer when he fired a final-round 69 for a 16-under-par total of 272 at the PGA Junior Championships. His four birdies over the last nine holes helped him beat runner-up Boyd Summer-hays of Farmington, Utah, by eight strokes.

Fernando Rodriguez
MIAMI
Rodriguez, 18, was named the American Legion national player of the year after throwing a five-hitter to lead Miami Post 346 to a 9-0 victory over Chino (Calif.) Post 299 in the title game of the Legion World Series. Rodriguez, a righthander, was 15-1 this season.
