Annett Buckner

Buckner, a senior volleyball outside hitter, and Johnson, a junior outside hitter, led No. 3-ranked UCLA to a five-set victory over then No. 11 Southern Cal 13-15, 9-15, 16-14, 15-13, 15-9. Buckner, a 1993 All-America, had 17 digs and a career-high 37 kills in the match, while Johnson, a 1993 All-Pac-10 player, registered 19 digs and a career-high 27 kills. Buckner's kill total was the second highest ever by a UCLA female volleyball player. In 23 matches this season Buckner and Johnson have 436 and 246 kills, respectively, along with 239 and 249 digs. Through last Friday the Bruins were 21-2.
Johnny Thomas
BATON ROUGE
Thomas, 53, the men's and women's cross-country coach at Southern, guided the Jaguars to their 28th straight home-meet win when Southern beat Xavier and Dillard in a tri-meet. Thomas, who is also the men's and women's track and field coach, has won 12 conference Coach of the Year awards in his sports.
Nathan Simmons
BOULDER, COLO.
Nathan, a senior tailback at Boulder High, rushed for 149 yards on 18 carries and one TD in three quarters as the Panthers—then No. 2 ranked in the state—defeated then No. 1 Cherry Creek High 32-29. Nathan has rushed for 1,137 yards and 15 TDs in Boulder's eight games so far this season.
Kathie McNally
CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
McNally, a two-time All-Canada halfback in field hockey and a four-time Academic All-Canada at the University of Prince Edward Island, won the James Bayer Award for her athleticism, leadership and sportsmanship. McNally, now a first-year medical student, was also a Rhodes scholar finalist.
Ron Donaldson
MONTREAL
Donaldson, a 24-year-old boxer, defeated Rasmus Ojemaye of Nigeria 26-13 to win the gold medal in the middleweight division at the Commonwealth Games. Donaldson also won the gold in the Multi-Nation Tournament, in which boxers from 15 countries participated, in Liverpool, England.
