Pope, a junior defender, and Suarez, a sophomore forward, led North Carolina to a 5-1 defeat of defending national soccer champion and then top-ranked Virginia. The win was only the second by North Carolina over the Cavaliers since 1981, a span of 20 matches. Pope, the Tar Heel captain and an All-ACC choice in 1993, spearheaded a defense against Virginia that allowed only a late second-half goal. He also had two assists. Through last Friday Pope tallied seven goals and four assists. Suarez is North Carolina's top scorer with 16 goals and seven assists, including two game-winning goals. The Tar Heels were 13-5 through last Friday.

Beth Anders
VIRGINIA BEACH
Anders, 43, the field hockey coach at Old Dominion, led the Monarchs to a 17-5-1 mark this season and an NCAA record 14th straight tournament berth. Since Anders arrived at Old Dominion in 1980, the Monarchs have won seven national titles and have amassed a 267-26-7 mark.

Gary McGill
TAYLORSVILLE, MISS.
Gary, a senior running back at Taylorsville High, scored three touchdowns in the Tartars' 35-8 win over South Leake High to break the state career TD record of 87 set by Philadelphia High's Marcus Dupree in 1981. Through Friday, Gary had scored 95 touchdowns in his high school career.

Nikki Gugliotta
DAVIDSONVILLE, MD.
Gugliotta, 25, won the women's National Duathlon Championship by completing a 30K cycling race sandwiched between two 5K runs in 1:20:56.7. A member of three ACC-champion women's cross-country teams at North Carolina State, she began cycling just last April.

Andrew Luciuk
BARRHEAD, ALBERTA
Andrew, 17, a left wing for the Sherwood Park team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, scored six goals in a game against Bonnyville to lead the Crusaders to a 10-6 win. Through last Friday, Andrew led the AJHL in goals (18), was second in points (32) and was 10th in assists (14).
