MONEY PLAYER WHEN TYUS EDNEY WENT OUT, THE SOPHOMORE POINT GUARD CASHED IN

Cameron Dollar knew that his first two years as a Bruin would be a
sacrifice, that he would be on the bench more at UCLA than he
might be in another basketball program. But as point guard Tyus
Edney's understudy, Dollar also knew that he would get better, and
he knew that by going against Edney every day in practice, he
would get quicker. ``Cameron is our Steve Young,'' says Bruin
assistant coach Steve Lavin. ``He's waiting in the wings, but he
doesn't mind because he's behind a legend, behind our Joe
Montana.''

Dollar's own legend began when, as a senior from St. John's
Prospect Hall in Frederick, Md., he sported a suit during his
recruiting visit to UCLA and requested a meeting with athletic
director Peter T. Dalis. No recruit before or since has been bold
enough to make such a request. Also, few players, especially
sophomore reserves, would dare to criticize All-America forward Ed
O'Bannon. But against Connecticut in the West Regional final, when
O'Bannon wandered away from the basket and allowed the Huskies an
easy tip-in, the fiery Dollar angrily shouted, ``C'mon, what are
you doing, Ed? Where were you?''

That intensity was evident in the title game against Arkansas.
Dollar distributed eight assists, played tenacious defense and
provided an emotional spark for 36 minutes while Edney, the senior
who had led the Bruins to the championship game, nursed a sprained
right wrist. ``It's like a running back running 99 yards and
getting caught from behind at the one,'' Dollar said of Edney's
predicament. ``Then they send in the fullback to score the
touchdown.''

Plenty of scoring opportunities remain for Dollar, who, like San
Francisco 49er Steve Young, has proved he can quarterback a
winner.
