THE CALCUTTA KID

Monday qualifier Arjun Atwal shot 67 in the opening round of the
Buick Classic, but he faded with rounds of 76-73-72 to finish
43rd. The 23-year-old two-time National Junior College champion
from Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y., by way of
Calcutta, has been traveling between India and Westbury,
N.Y.--where his parents bought a second home to help further his
golf career--since he was in the ninth grade.

After graduating from Nassau, Atwal enrolled at Rollins College
in Winter Park, Fla., but he dropped out to turn pro after a
semester. "They gave him an afternoon class," explained Larry
Dellaquilla, the Nassau coach and Atwal's caddie last week. "I
warned their coach to schedule all his classes in the morning.
Afternoons for Arjun are spent on the golf course, no matter
what."
