Alberto Guardado Jr. of the U.S. edged Healer Modiradilo of
Botswana 11-9 in a 106-pound bout after Modiradilo closed from
11-5 in the final minute. Terrance Cauthen, like Guardado a U.S.
medal contender, beat Mahammatkodir Abdullayev of Uzbekistan
18-6 in a 132-pound bout. Also at 132, Tontcho Tontchev of
Bulgaria, an Olympic quarterfinalist in 1992, .battered Oktavian
Tsykou of Moldova badly enough to stop the bout in the second
round.
EQUESTRIAN
THREE-DAY EVENT
Husband-and-wife team Karen and David O'Connor led the U.S. to
the top of the standings with the two best scores of the day.
Karen O'Connor, on Biko, scored 39.6 penalty points and David
O'Connor, on Giltedge, 40.8. The U.S. team's total stands at
80.4 after the opening day, with Great Britain second at 84.2.

WOMEN'S TEAM COMPULSORIES
Shannon Miller's 9.737 on the balance beam, the highest score
all day on that apparatus, helped the U.S. hang on to second
place, just .127 of a point behind Russia. In third and fourth
are Romania and Ukraine, whose Lilia Podkopayeva has the best
all-around score at 39.149. China and Belarus round out the top
six advancing to tomorrow's finals.

PRELIMINARIES
Steven Redgrave of Great Britain stayed on track to win his
fourth gold medal in as many Olympics by advancing to Thursday's
semifinals in men's pairs without cox with partner Matthew
Pinsent. Missy Schwen and Karen Kraft of the U.S. won the
women's pairs without cox by more than a boat length to earn a
semis spot. Gold medal pick Derek Porter of Canada advanced in
single sculls.
