PRELIMINARIES AND CLASSIFICATION

of his opponents. But his countrymen and fellow gold medal
favorites 136.5-pound Sergei Martinov and 198-pound Gogi
Kogouachvilla both suffered upsets. U.S. superheavyweight and

showdown with Karelin.

Lightning and severe-thunderstorm warnings off the coast of

champion Jose van der Ploeg Garcia of Spain finished first in
the Finn race, and the U.S. edged out Russia to take the lead in
the Soling competition. The Canadian combo of Ross Macdonald and
Eric Jaspersen rounded out the day with a win in the Star.
