PRELIMINARIES
The first day of beach volleyball competition in Olympic history
was perfect for the three U.S. women's teams: Holly McPeak and
Nancy Reno, the tournament's second seeds, defeated Brigitte
Lesage and Annabelle Prawerman of France 15-4; Gail Castro and
Deb Richardson defeated the Netherlands' Debora Schooh-Kadjik
and Lisette Van de Ven 15-4; and Linda Hanley and Barbra Fontana
Harris beat Merita Bernsten and Ragni Hestad of Norway 15-8,
setting up a meeting with fifth-seeded Monica Rodrigues and
Adriana Samuel of Brazil.

BOXING

FIRST ROUND
Eric Morel of the U.S. lost 24-12 to Cuba's Maiko Romero at 112
pounds. Morel was the first American boxer to be defeated as the
U.S. ran its record for the tournament to 7-1 with David Reid's
20-4 win against Lee Wan Kyun of South Korea in the 156-pound
weight class.

EQUESTRIAN

THREE-DAY EVENT
Australia moved into first place after the endurance phase of
the team competition, vaulting five places in the standings to
lead with 183.60 points. The U.S. (244.60) is second and New
Zealand (255.80) is third entering today's show jumping at the
Georgia International Horse Park. Canada, third after the
dressage, was eliminated after two team members failed to
complete the course.

ROWING

Silken Laumann of Canada and Ruth Davidson of the U.S. advanced
to tomorrow's semifinals in the women's single sculls after
finishing first and second, respectively, in their repechage
race. In the men's single sculls, world champion Itzok Cop of
Slovenia and Cyrus Beasley of the U.S. also advanced through
their repechage to the semifinals. Michael Peterson and Adam
Holland of the U.S. moved to the next round in the men's pair
without cox.

PRELIMINARIES
Wei Wang and Lily Yip were the only U.S. winners in the first
day of men's and women's doubles competition, defeating Emily
Noor and Huberta Vriesekoop of the Netherlands 21-18, 11-21,
21-11. The U.S. men's team of Jim Butler and Todd Sweeris lost
their opening match against Andrey Mazunov and Dmitriy Mazunov
in straight sets.

TENNIS

FIRST ROUND
Andre Agassi and Monica Seles of the U.S., the No. 1 seeds in
the men's and women's tournaments, respectively, won their
opening-round matches at the Stone Mountain Tennis Center. Also
winning their openers were women's third seed Arantxa Sanchez
Vicario and defending men's champion Marc Rosset.

PRELIMINARIES
Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira of Brazil held a one-point
lead over Mark Reynolds and Hal Haenel of the U.S. in the Star
class after the second day of the Olympic regatta. In the Europe
class, Courtney Becker-Dey finished sixth yesterday to end the
day in second place to Kristine Roug of Denmark. Peer Moberg of
Norway leads the Laser class, and Germany holds a two-point lead
over the U.S. in the Soling. Defending gold medalist Barbara
Kendall of New Zealand leads the women's Mistral competition.
