PRELIMINARIES
Karch Kiraly of the U.S. opened his bid for a third gold medal,
teaming with partner Kent Steffes to beat Andrea Ghiurghi and
Nicola Grigolo of Italy 15-7 in 36 minutes. The other two U.S.
men's teams also won, but Nancy Reno and Holly McPeak were the
sole winners among the U.S. women, scoring the final 11 points
for a 15-6 win over Beate Buhler and Danja Musch of Germany.
BOXING
FIRST ROUND
Gold medal favorite Antonio Tarver of the U.S. drew more boos
than cheers from the home crowd with a listless 5-2 win over
Dmitry Vybornov of Russia in the 178-pound class. Coach Al
Mitchell deemed the light-on-the-punches performance"lousy," but
he can't complain overall: U.S. boxers are 9-1 after the first
round.
CYCLING
PRELIMINARIES
Andreas Collinelli of Italy set a world record in the individual
pursuit, finishing his heat in 4:19.699, while Kent Bostick of
the U.S. finished ninth and failed to advance. Australia's
Michelle Ferris set an Olympic record of 11.212 seconds in the
200-meter-sprint time trial.

INDIVIDUAL THREE-DAY EVENT
Mary King of Great Britain leads the field with 31.60 points
following the dressage competition. David O'Connor, part of the
silver-medal-winning U.S. team, is in second with 37.60 points,
while Nikki Bishop of Australia is third.
