PRELIMINARIES
Men's top seed Joko Suprianto of Indonesia advanced with a
15-11, 15-12 victory against Jens Olsson of Sweden. His
countrywoman and defending gold medalist Susi Susanti defeated
Doris Piche of Canada 11-1, 11-3. The 1992 women's silver
medalist, Bang Soo Hyun of South Korea, also moved to the round
of 16.

The top U.S. team of Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno was eliminated
by Linda Handley and Barbra Fontana Harris in the quarterfinals.
McPeak said afterward that she doubts she and Reno will play
together in the future.

BOXING

SECOND ROUND
Cuba suffered its first defeat in the Olympics when Mansueto
Velasco of the Philippines won a 14-5 decision against Mansueto
Velasco in the 106-pound class. Albert Guardado of the U.S.
moved into the 106-pound quarterfinals, defeating Anicet
Rasonnaivo of Madagascar.

CYCLING

PRELIMINARIES
The U.S. team continued its disappointing Olympics as the men's
pursuit team lost in the quarterfinals to Australia. Russia set
a new Olympic team pursuit record of 4:08.785. Rebecca Twigg of
the U.S. was eliminated in the women's individual pursuit
quarterfinals.

DIVING

WOMEN'S PLATFORM PRELIMINARIES
Defending Olympic champion Fu Mingxia of China led after the
first day of competition, followed by Becky Ruehl of the U.S.
The 1992 bronze medalist, Mary Ellen Clark of the U.S., was a
distant 12th.

Theresa Bell and Lindsay Burns of the U.S. advanced to the
finals of the lightweight double sculls with a win. Entering the
finals of all 14 rowing events today and tomorrow, Australia
leads all countries, with 10 finalists. Germany and Canada
placed eight boats in the finals, the U.S. seven.

PRELIMINARIES
Juan Romero of Guatemala, Ennio Falco of Italy and Miroslaw
Rzepkowski of Poland each shot three perfect-25 target rounds in
the first day of the men's skeet competition. The final two
rounds will be shot today.

Jan-Ove Waldner of Sweden won again in his attempt to retain his
Olympic men's singles title, overcoming South Korea's Lee Chul
Seung 21-11, 21-19. Waldner is undefeated in his preliminary
group and is assured of moving on to the second round.

ROUND 2
Andre Agassi of the U.S., filling in for the injured Richey
Reneberg, teamed with MaliVai Washington to win their
first-round doubles match, defeating Oscar Ortiz and Alejandro
Hernandez of Mexico 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. At the end of the second
round of singles competition, 10 of the 16 men's seeded players
had been eliminated, while only three of the 16 women's seeds
had been defeated.

Kris Stookey and Louise Van Voorhis of the U.S. won a women's
470-class race to move into first place ahead of Ruslana Taran
and Olena Pakholchik of Ukraine. Lai Shan Lee of Hong Kong leads
the women's Mistral class. A medal for Lee would be the first
ever won by Hong Kong.
