SECOND ROUND
In the 125-pound class Floyd Mayweather Jr. became the sixth
U.S. boxer to advance to the quarterfinals, with a 16-3 decision
against Artur Gevorgyan of Armenia. Mayweather's teammate super
heavyweight Lawrence Clay-Bey lost 10-8, but at the press
conference after the match he told reporters, "Smile, it's not
the end of the world. It's the Olympics."
CYCLING
PRELIMINARIES
Marty Nothstein of the U.S. beat Australia's Darryn Hill and
Canada's Curt Harnett to lock up a medal in the men's sprints.
He will race Jens Fielder of Germany today for the gold. Marion
Clignet of France and Antonella Bellutti of Italy qualified for
the women's pursuit final.
EQUESTRIAN
TEAM DRESSAGE PRELIMINARIES
Michelle Gibson, from the Atlanta suburb of Roswell, led the
U.S. to third place in the standings with her score of 1,880,
second best of the 23 competitors. The Americans totaled 3,529
points, just behind the Netherlands, at 3,544. First-place
Germany had a comfortable lead at 3,708.

Monica Seles of the U.S. reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3,
6-3 win over Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina. Spain's Arantxa
Sanchez Vicario, South Africa's Wayne Ferreira and Italy's Renzo
Furlan also advanced.
SECOND ROUND
Gigi Fernandez and Mary Joe Fernandez teamed to beat France's
Mary Pierce and Nathalie Tauziat in women's doubles.
TRACK AND FIELD
QUALIFYING
Maria Mutola of Mozambique was the top qualifier for the women's
800-meter final tomorrow, running a quick 1:57.62. Ana Quirot
also qualified for the final. Michael Johnson of the U.S. was
the fastest qualifier for today's men's 400 semifinals.
Johnson's countryman Butch Reynolds, the 400 world-record
holder, also moved into the semifinals.

with Kris Stookey and Louise van Voorhis of the U.S.
