WOMEN'S ROUND OF 16
World-record holder and gold medal favorite Natalia Valeeva of
Moldova advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Kirstin Lewis
of South Africa 160-143. Also moving on to the quarters is
Barbara Mensing of Germany, who barely won against Nurfitriyana
Lantang of Indonesia, 144-141.
BADMINTON
MEN'S DOUBLES SEMIFINALS
As expected, Ricky Subajga and Rexy Mainaky of Indonesia
advanced to tomorrow's finals, with a 15-3, 15-5 thrashing of
Tan Kim Her and Soo Beng Kiang of Malaysia. Their opponents will
be Yap Kim Hock and Soon Kit Cheah, also of Malaysia, who
advanced by beating Indonesia's Denny Kantono and S. Antonius
15-10, 15-4.
MIXED DOUBLES QUARTERFINALS
Medal favorites Ra Kyung Min and Park Joo Bong of South Korea
swept Wang Xiaoyuan and Tao Xiaoqiang of China 15-7, 15-9.
They'll take on China's Liu Jianjun and Sun Man in today's
semifinals. In the other semi match, Peng Xingyong and Chen
Xingdong, who defeated Denmark's Rikke Olsen and Michael Soggard
10-15, 15-6, 18-15, will play Kim Dong Moon and Gil Young Ah of
South Korea.

leaders. Also finishing in the scrum at the top is Anne
Kursinski of the U.S., riding Eros.

was Chen Jing of Chinese Taipei, who easily dispatched Hong
Kong's Tan Lui Chan 21-12, 21-15, 21-19. The semis will be
filled out by Liu Wei of China, who defeated Kim Hyon of North
Korea 21-12, 22-20, 21-14.

QUARTERFINALS
Sixth seed Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic upset top seed
Monica Seles of the U.S. 7-5, 3-6, 8-6 in a 21/2-hour match.
Novotna will go for another upset in tomorrow's semis when she
plays Spain's Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. Sanchez Vicario, the
third seed, beat eighth-seeded Kimiko Date of Japan 4-6, 6-3,
10-8. Mary Joe Fernandez and Lindsay Davenport, both of the
U.S., will meet in the other semifinal. Fernandez beat No. 2
Conchita Martinez of Spain 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Davenport defeated
No. 4 Iva Majoli of Croatia 7-5, 6-3.
TRACK AND FIELD
QUALIFYING
Gail Devers of the U.S., the 100-meter gold medalist, advanced
to the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles by winning her
second-round heat in 12.83 seconds. However, John Godina, the
shot put silver medalist, failed to qualify for the finals of
the discus, finishing 14th with a throw of 202'10". Godina's
teammate Anthony Washington finished in third, the highest U.S.
qualifier, with a throw of 208'10".

PRELIMINARIES
Robert Scheidt of Brazil, the gold medal favorite, increased his
lead in the Laser class by finishing first in the 10th of the
competition's 11 races. Kristine Roug of Denmark, the two-time
defending world champion in the women's Europe class, placed
seventh in the 10th race of her competition; however, she still
maintains a comfortable overall lead heading into the final race
tomorrow. Courtney Becker-Dey of the U.S. finished second in
yesterday's Europe-class race but remained in third place overall.
