ARCHERY

MEN'S ROUND OF 16
Butch Johnson and Justin Huish of the U.S. advanced to the
quarterfinals of the individual competition. The other American
archer, Rod White, was defeated. Martinus Grove of Norway
eliminated defending gold medalist Sebastien Flute of France
161-158.

BADMINTON

SEMIFINALS
Defending gold medalist Susi Susanti of Indonesia lost to Bang
Soo Hyun of South Korea 11-9, 11-8. Bang will face 16-year-old
Mia Audina of Indonesia for the gold medal tomorrow. Dong Jiong
of China and Paul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen advanced to the men's final.

QUARTERFINALS
Four Cuban boxers advanced to the semifinals. Ariel Hernandez
and five-time world champion Felix Savon won during the evening
session, and Arnaldo Mesa and Juan Hernandez were victorious in
the afternoon.Cuba has a chance to claim five more semifinal
spots today.

CANOE

REPECHAGE
Mike Harbold of the U.S. had to race twice after a poor finish
in the morning but qualified for the semifinals after placing
second in his repechage race in the men's 1,000-meter singles.
Joseph Harper of the U.S. also moved on in the 1,000-meter
singles.

DIVING

PRELIMINARIES
World champion Tan Shuping of China was eliminated from the
competition after missing her third and fifth dives of the
round, finishing 21st. Melisa Moses and Jenny Keim of the U.S.
and Fu Mingxia of China all qualified for this morning's
semifinals.

REPECHAGE
John Mooney and Peter Newton won their repechage race to move
into the semifinals of the men's 1,000-meter pairs. The low
number of entries also allowed the U.S. four-man and four-woman
boats to move into the semifinals even though they finished near
the back of their heats.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING

TECHNICAL ROUTINE
The U.S. received three 10s--the only perfect scores awarded--to
take the lead heading into Friday's freestyle routines. The
Americans earned a score of 99.200, followed by Canada with
97.933 and Japan with 97.667. The technical routines will count
as 35% of each team's final total.

Liu Guoliang and Wang Tao of China, Joerg Rosskopf of Germany
and Petr Korbel of Czechoslovakia all won their matches to move
into today's semifinals. Rosskopf will face Liu, and Korbel will
play Wang.

TENNIS

QUARTERFINALS
Andre Agassi of the U.S., despite two warnings for using
profanity on the court, defeated Wayne Ferreira of South Africa
7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Sergi Brugera of Spain defeated MaliVai
Washington of the U.S. in three sets. In women's doubles, Mary
Joe and Gigi Fernandez of the U.S. moved into the semifinals by
beating Valda Lake and Clare Wood of Great Britain 6-2, 6-1.

WRESTLING (FREESTYLE)

CLASSIFICATIONS
Kurt Angle of the U.S., the 220-pound world champion, rallied to beat Sahid Murtazaliyev of Ukraine 4-3 to move into the semifinals, in which he will be joined by 125 1/2-pound teammate Kendall Cross and 149 1/2-pound teammate Townsend Saunders.

YACHTING

PRELIMINARIES
The U.S. women's 470 team finished fifth and 14th to tie for third with Ukraine heading into the final day of 470 sailing tomorrow. The U.S. men's 470 team was relegated to the back of the fleet after a premature start, which most likely ended its medal hopes.
