Ivan Klementyev of Latvia advanced in the men's 1,000-meter
singles sprint, leading all qualifiers with a time of 4:10.455.
Moldova's Nikolai Juravschi and Victor Reneskiy finished with
the best time (3:44.008) in the men's 1,000-meter doubles.

DIVING

MEN'S PLATFORM PRELIMINARIES
Dimitri Sautin of Russia, the gold medal favorite, easily
advanced to the finals. China's Xiao Hailiang and Tian Liang
placed second and third, respectively. Patrick Jeffrey was the
highest U.S. qualifier, finishing fifth, with 406.74 points,
46.08 points behind Sautin.

RHYTHMIC PRELIMINARIES
Bulgaria outpaced Spain and gold medal favorite Russia by
scoring 39.016 points. Spain finished with 38.966, and Russia
ended the day with 38.882. The Bulgarians, third behind Russia
and Spain after the five-hoops competition, took the lead by
winning the three-balls-and-two-ribbons event.

SEMIFINALS
Men's 1,000-meter singles sprint gold medal favorite Knut
Holmann of Norway moved onto the finals with a qualifying time
of 3:41.635. In the women's 500-meter fours, Kinga Czigany, Eva
Donusz, Szilvia Mednyanszki and Erika Meszaros of Hungary won
their heat in 1:37.145. The men's 1,000-meter pairs favorites
from Italy, Antonio Rossi and Daniele Scarpa, also advanced.

TRACK AND FIELD

QUALIFYING
Jackie Joyner-Kersee of the U.S., who pulled out of the
heptathlon last week with a hamstring injury, qualified for the
long jump final by leaping 21'113/4". In the women's high jump,
gold medal favorite Stefka Kostadinova of Bulgaria advanced by
clearing 6'11/4". In the men's 1,500-meter wheelchair finals,
Claude Issorat of France finished first, completing the race in
3:15.18. Alix Sauvage of Australia won the women's 800 meters in
1:54.90.

WRESTLING (FREESTYLE)

PRELIMINARIES
Superheavyweight Bruce Baumgartner of the U.S., a two-time gold
medal winner who was looking to win a record-tying third gold
medal, was upset by Andrei Shumilin of Russia 6-1. However, two
other Americans, Tom Brands at 136.5 pounds and Kenny Monday at
163 pounds, did advance to today's semifinals.
