BOTTOM LINES

CHARITY: Go figure. In 1996 the Byron Nelson Classic had a $1.8
million purse and gave $4 million to charity. The Players
Championship offered $3.5 million in prize money but donated
$590,000.

EXEMPT: Neal Lancaster won $179,273 in 34 Tour events to claim
the 125th spot and the final exemption on the '97 money list.
Jose Maria Olazabal was next, with $173,589--in only six starts.

OLYMPIA FIELDS: Wondering why the USGA chose the Chicago-area
club as the site of the 2003 U.S. Open rather than Merion? Guess
which course paid its dues by hosting the 1997 Senior Open.

PRICING TIGER: A three-day ticket to last week's Tiger Woods
Invitational in Japan cost $490.

BIG MOMMA: JoAnne Carner, 58, finished 161st on the LPGA money
list, with earnings of $13,344 in 10 starts.

CANADA: Our northern neighbor has more golfers per capita (165
per 1,000) than the U.S. (100).

BILL GLASSON: "My goal is to win as many tournaments as [I've
had] surgeries." He'll have to pick up the pace. Glasson has
seven Tour wins, but has been operated on 12 times.
