SUNDAY SPECIAL: PRICE MAY GO LOW
Has Nick Price paid the price of success? Since his nine-win
blitz of 1993 and '94, the globetrotting Price has won only once
on Tour, ringing up a victory at the '97 MCI Classic. But don't
forget that the two-time player of the year hasn't stopped
winning overseas. He nabbed four titles on the European and
South African tours last year. Even with only one PGA Tour
victory in 1997 he earned $1,053,845 in the U.S., enough to rank
17th on the money list, despite losing his caddie and friend
Jeff (Squeeky) Medlen to leukemia. In addition to Price, who
stands 41st on the '98 money list, keep an eye on Davis Love III
this week. In the past seven years he has won the MCI twice and
missed the cut twice, lending credence to the theory that Love
knows no bounds.

WACHESAW IS WHAT YOU GET
The event that used to be the Susan G. Komen International is
now the City of Hope Classic, but that shouldn't faze defending
champ Karrie Webb, for while the tournament has a new name and a
bigger purse--up 20% this year to $600,000--the course remains
the same. The LPGA's Thunder from Down Under shot 66-66 on the
weekend to win at Wachesaw Plantation East last year. She has
already notched a victory in '98 at the Australian Ladies
Masters and brings enough momentum to the City of Hope to dim
the hopes of Helen Alfredsson, Laura Davies and Pat Hurst.

HALE BOPPING BACK TO PGA NATIONAL
Among players who won majors by 12 shots last year, Hale Irwin
was a shade overshadowed. Yes, Irwin matched Tiger Woods's
Masters margin at the '97 PGA Seniors' Championship, but he has
only one victory this season, at last month's Toshiba Senior
Classic, and is straining to keep three-time winner Gil Morgan
in his sights. This week Morgan, Raymond Floyd and Jack
Nicklaus, fresh off his brilliant showing at Augusta, will try
to foil Irwin at PGA National (above), and there's another
fellow whose number could come up at the 59th PGA Seniors'
Championship: Mr. 59, Al Geiberger.
