A LOAF OF SUGAR AND A TON OF BREAD
When 1997 BellSouth Classic champ Scott McCarron told Tiger
Woods the TPC at Sugarloaf is friendly to big hitters, Woods
asked, "Do you think I'd do well there?"
"Yeah," said McCarron.
"You think I should play there?"
"No," said McCarron.
One of the longest courses on Tour at 7,216 yards, Sugarloaf was
Greg Norman's first solo design. Several pros who were MIA in
'97, including Woods, Davis Love III and Vijay Singh, are headed
to Atlanta to chase the BellSouth's $324,000 top prize, but most
ticket-toting Sugarloafers will cheer David Duval, Stewart Cink
and U.S. Amateur champ Matt Kuchar, all from Georgia Tech.
Techies are heroes in a town where Yellow Jackets are prized
more than green ones.

PLAYING METAL WOODS AND STEEL GUITARS
Country swingers Amy Grant and Vince Gill were to play the
pro-am on Wednesday and Thursday, but they're only opening for
Annika Sorenstam and Meg Mallon at the Sara Lee Classic. Watch
also for Terry-Jo Myers, defending the second of two titles she
won in '97, a year in which she rebounded from interstitial
cystitis to win $313,015; Tammie Green, who bounced back from
1996 surgery to have her best year in '97; and Helen Alfredsson,
a two-time winner in '98 now that she's fully recovered from a
balky hamstring. Terry-Jo, Tammie and Helen's hammy--that sounds
like a country song worthy of a Grammy.

GREAT MOMENTS IN DENTISTRY
Jim Dent says that the highlights of his career have been
winning tournaments with his kids in attendance and beating Lee
Trevino at last year's Home Depot Invitational. Defending champ
Dent won't delight his family by redenting Trevino this
week--Lee decided to take the week off to celebrate the 40th
birthday of his wife, Claudia. Dent, who defeated Trevino and
the late Larry Gilbert in a playoff last spring for his 11th win
on the Senior tour, turns 59 on Saturday. Ray Floyd, Jim Colbert
and Dave Stockton will try to spoil his party.
