THE DREADED CURSE OF ROYAL QUIRKDALE
During the 1965 British Open at Royal Birkdale, Gary Player
injured himself while stretching in the bathtub. He withdrew
from both tub and tournament. In '76 the Open was delayed when
Royal Birkdale caught fire and flaming gorse singed the course
near the 1st fairway and the 2nd tee. In '83 at Birkdale, Hale
Irwin missed a two-inch putt and lost by a stroke. In '91 a
streaker hugged Jose Maria Olazabal. If you still don't believe
in curses, here's another fact that might sway you: The last
Open winner at Quirkdale was Ian Baker-Finch.

MORGAN'S THE NAME OF THIS GAME
Walter Morgan claimed the Ameritech title in '96. Gil Morgan won
it last year. The '98 champ will need to tame the fierce 432-yard
par-4 16th. The fourth-toughest hole on the Senior tour in '97
has been lengthened 17 yards. Given recent history, one of the
favorites has to be a winless Senior from England, John Morgan.
