LARRUPIN' LEFTY'S THE STUD IN THIS STABLE

In the International's modified Stableford scoring system, which
awards points for par-breakers, you either beat par or get
beaten. Nick Faldo made 18 pars in the first round last year, a
decade after doing the same in the final round to win the 1987
British Open, and he missed the cut. Castle Pines is heavily
wooded, as John Huston (above) discovered last year. The
champion's $360,000 in long green is most likely to go to Phil
Mickelson, who won here a year ago and is the tournament's only
multiple winner.

LPGA
LOW-PRICE LEADERS ON A SUPERMARKET SPREE

Last summer the oversized check for the winner of the LPGA
Classic in Maple Grove, Minn., was inscribed with an oversized
name, Danielle Ammaccapane. This summer the Classic signed a
one-year deal with new title sponsor Rainbow Foods, but the
purse remains one of the tour's smallest at $600,000. That's one
reason Annika Sorenstam, Se Ri Pak and Karrie Webb will sit this
one out, but Ammaccapane will still have no picnic defending her
title against Brandie Burton, Nancy Lopez, Meg Mallon and
Colleen Walker.

FADING TREVINO HOPES TO HOOK A BIG ONE

Lee Trevino, a classic left-to-right player, didn't crack the
top 10 in his first four appearances at the Northville Long
Island Classic. With 14 doglegs, only one of which veers to the
right, Meadow Brook was anything but fader-friendly, so Trevino
went to work in his garage, fashioning a special Northville
driver to help him draw the ball. He won the event in '94 and
again in '95. Hale Irwin and Gil Morgan are taking the week off,
enhancing Trevino's chances to hook the $150,000 winner's check.
