THE WEEK DAVID BECAME A GOLIATH

A year ago David Duval (above) was an also-ran, a nonwinner who
had seven second-place finishes in three years. Then he birdied
the first hole of sudden death at the 1997 Michelob
Championship, making a trivia answer of Grant Waite and Duffy
Waldorf and starting a 21-tournament stretch in which he won six
titles and $3,339,283. This year Duval is the only Tour player
who has won more than twice. With six of the world's top 10
golfers, including Mark O'Meara and Tiger Woods, at St. Andrews
for the Dunhill Cup, Duval will duel 155 others for the
Michelob's $342,000 first prize.

THE EVENT OF A LIFETIME

Only five years old, the Tournament of Champions is celebrating
a Lifetime achievement. This year's distaff T of C will be the
first tournament televised by the Lifetime Network. Actress
Cheryl Ladd will serve as celeb commentator on the cable
network's highlight shows at 10:30 on Thursday and Friday nights
and its live coverage on Saturday and Sunday. The event's select
field includes Annika Sorenstam and Se Ri Pak, the only
four-time winners of 1998.

Senior Tour
JOHNNY COMES LIMPING HOME

It's Miller time in California's wine country. Johnny Miller
will take his first Senior swing of the year in Napa, his
hometown. Miller, who was thought to be avoiding competition due
to his notoriously bad putting, recently revealed that he had
broken his right knee in January, when his parked car began
rolling and he jumped in and banged his kneecap on the dash. At
the Transamerica, Miller may well outdrive such Senior stalwarts
as Isao Aoki, Hugh Baiocchi and defending champ Dave
Eichelberger, but he'll have a tough time outscoring them. Time
heals knees, but the yips can last forever.
