The Buzzer

Trailing 70-69 with 5.4 seconds left in the Ohio Valley
Conference title game, Murray State coach Tevester Anderson
began diagramming a long inbounds pass play when junior guard
Aubrey Reese interrupted him. "Coach, please let me win the game
for you. I can hit the shot." After dribbling the length of the
floor, Reese was good to his word, hitting a miraculous shot at
the buzzer....

When Southern Mississippi guard Neil Reed made a do-or-die
three-pointer to beat Louisville 59-58 last Saturday, it truly
was a money shot. It cost the Cardinals a share of the
Conference USA regular-season crown, which would have given
Louisville coach Denny Crum a $15,000 bonus....

Add UNLV's Shawn Marion to the list of former junior college
stars making a huge impact this year. Marion, a 6'7" forward,
led the Rebels in scoring (18.7 points a game), rebounds (9.2),
blocks (54) and steals (70) during the regular season, and 16-11
UNLV was seeded No. 1 in the Mountain Division of this week's
WAC tournament....

Here's proof that it's not how many shots you take but how many
you make: Last Saturday, Navy attempted 32 more field goals than
Lehigh but hit just 17 of 76 (22.4%) and lost 53-45, and Arizona
tried 24 more than Stanford but sank just 28 of 74 (37.8%),
compared with the Cardinal's 27 of 50 (54%), as Stanford won
98-83.
