The Week June 22-28

Tour de Force

Juli Inkster is making as much noise at 39 as David Duval did
with 59, her victory in the LPGA Championship completing a
career Grand Slam. Inkster, who last month won the third leg of
the slam at the U.S. Open, should be proud, and so should her
tour. With Laura Davies and Se Ri Pak, among others, also
contending, the LPGA put on a show that was superior to the
Senior Players, another major, and light-years better than the
Buick Classic.

PGA Duffy Waldorf rose to 66th (from 128th) in the World Ranking
and to 39th (from 102nd) on the money list at the Buick by
birdieing the last two holes of regulation at Westchester
Country Club in Rye, N.Y., and the first hole of a playoff to
beat Dennis Paulson. The top 50 in the world and the top 30 in
earnings qualify for the season-ending World stroke play Nov.
4-7 at Valderrama, in Spain.... Joel Kribel shot 75-72 to miss
the cut by two strokes in his pro debut.... David Duval tied for
10th and earned $51,875, which puts him over $3 million for the

LPGA Inkster, who won the LPGA Championship by four strokes over
runner-up Liselotte Neumann at DuPont Country Club in
Wilmington, Del., was the only player to shoot in the 60s on all
four days. The only other major winner to accomplish that feat
is Betsy King, also at the LPGA Championship, in 1992.... Karrie
Webb, who missed the cut by a stroke, ended her streak of
consecutive top 10 finishes at 16.... Green Bay Country Club is
the probable site for the first women's senior tour event, for
players 40 and older, in May 2000, according to the Green Bay
Area Chamber of Commerce.

SENIOR Hale Irwin's winning total of 21-under-par 267 in the
Senior Players Championship at the TPC of Michigan, in Dearborn,
tied Gil Morgan's tournament record at that venue.... Irwin has
won five Senior majors and has 23 Senior victories in all, which
ties him with Bob Charles for third on the alltime list. Miller
Barber is second, with 24, and Lee Trevino first, with 28.

ALSO David Park of Wales, who lost a six-hole playoff in his
first European tour start two weeks ago, beat David Carter and
Retief Goosen by a stroke at the Compaq European Grand Prix in
Northumberland, England.... In his 22nd start on the Euro tour,
Justin Rose made his first cut but shot 82-73 on the weekend to
come in 74th.... Jody Niemann, 22, won the U.S. Women's Public
Links, one up, over Sue Billek-Nyhus.... Jeff Freeman of
Tamarisk Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., won the PGA Club
Pro title at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
