Volleyball Holverson, 46, became the first Illinois high school coach to win two state volleyball championships in the same school year by guiding Carl Sandburg High to the boys title. Last fall the Eagles girls won the crown for Holverson, who amassed a combined 75-9 record for the year.
COLOR PHOTO: BOB STOCKFIELD Owen Daly, Baltimore Lacrosse Owen, 18, won the most valuable player award after leading the U.S. to victory in the 19-and-under world championships in Adelaide, Australia. Owen, winner of the Kelly Award as Maryland's best high school player in 1999, at the McDonogh School, will attend Princeton.
COLOR PHOTO: JIM MIDGETT Michael Creed, Colorado Springs Cycling Creed, 18, won a national-record 17th junior title with his victory in the Cincinnati Junior Road Cycling Championships. Holder of junior national track records in the 2 km and 20 km, he will compete in the world junior track championships in Athens later this month.
COLOR PHOTO: TOM KIMMELL Courtney Bennigson, Boston Triathlon Bennigson, a junior at Williams College, won the 19-and-under division of the Vineman Triathlon with a time of 2:10:51. By earlier winning the U.S. junior world championship qualifier, she earned a place on the USA Triathlon collegiate national team.

Powerlifting Cortes, 69, a retired General Motors repairman, won his 17th masters national championship with a victory in the 65-and-over division. The win qualified him for a chance to win his seventh world championship next month in Sun City, South Africa.

A week earlier he played power forward on the 15-and-under national AAU basketball champion Virginia Beach Heat.
