The Week Aug. 17-23

Tale of the tape between the freshly minted European Ryder Cup
team and the U.S. side. Euros: Seven rookies. U.S.: One. Euros:
54 matches. U.S.: 85. Euros: 31 points (27-19-8). U.S.: 39 1/2
(33-39-13). Euros: Jarmo Sandelin (65th), Andrew Coltart (69th),
Padraig Harrington (83rd) and Jean Van de Velde (89th) rank
outside the top 50. U.S.: Nos. 1, 2 and 4 (Tiger Woods, David
Duval and Davis Love III). Sound familiar?

PGA Had he not double-bogeyed the 16th hole on Sunday, Sprint
International winner David Toms would've been the first player
to reach 50 points in the 14-year history of the Stableford
event. With 47, Toms tied '98 champ Vijay Singh for the
second-highest total (one behind '97 winner Phil Mickelson) and
got his second Tour victory.... Woods, who missed the
third-round cut by a stroke (but still earned $12,480), has
failed to make it to the final round of a tournament only three
times in 66 starts as a pro. Woods missed the cut in the '97
Canadian Open and withdrew from last year's rain-delayed AT&T

LPGA For the second year in a row, an Ohio State alum, Rosie
Jones, won the Firstar Classic at the Country Club of the North
in Beaver Creek, Ohio. Jones beat Becky Iverson and Jan
Stephenson in a playoff. Buckeye Meg Mallon won in '98....
Stephenson, 47, would've been the oldest LPGA winner. JoAnne
Carner was 46 when she won the '85 Safeco Classic.

SENIOR Tom McGinnis, who beat Hale Irwin in a playoff at the
BankBoston Classic, is the fifth rookie winner of '99, after
Bruce Fleisher, Allen Doyle, Gary McCord and Christy O'Connor.

ALSO Colin Montgomerie won his fifth European tour event this
year, topping Harrington by three shots at the BMW International
Open in Munich.... David Gossett of Germantown, Tenn., defeated
Sung Yoon Kim of Seoul 9 and 8 in the U.S. Amateur final....
Chuck Yash will succeed Ely Callaway as CEO of Callaway Golf,
while former Callaway executive Mark King has replaced George
Montgomery as head of Taylor Made.
