COLOR PHOTO: THOM VOLLENWEIDERCarol Sing, San Diego Swimming Sing, 58, became the oldest woman, by 10 years, to swim the English Channel when she completed the 21 1/2-mile crossing from Dover, England, to Cap Gris-Nez, France, in 12 hours, 32 minutes. She's also the only woman over 50 to swim the 22 miles from Catalina Island to Palos Verdes, Calif.

Football Craig, a senior at Lockport High, rushed for 457 yards on 34 carries and scored eight touchdowns in the Porters' 57-43 victory over Thornwood High. It was his second career eight-touchdown game; he attained that number in the first round of the 1998 state 6A playoffs.

A plus-one handicapper and the Westview High boys' golf coach, Edwards-Powell also took the state Tournament of Champions and Senior Stroke Play crowns.

Tennis Reed, 66, received the Service Bowl Award given annually by the USTA to the female player who makes a notable contribution to the game's sportsmanship, fellowship and service. She's second nationally in the women's 65-and-over rankings and has won 70 USTA titles.

Baseball Michael, 18, threw a three-hitter in leading the American Baseball Federation high school all-star team to a 3-1 victory over the RBI high school national team. Last spring he led Lexington Catholic to the state high school title. He's attending Kentucky on a baseball scholarship.

It was Shankweiler's third national crown; in June he won the national four-wall title. He has also earned 17 state and local titles in the last five years.
