Top 10 Disappointments

1. Pac-10--The conference has been pitiful this season and
doesn't have a team ranked in the Top 25. Pac-10 schools are 0-4
against Top 25 teams, and preseason favorite Arizona has been a
major dud. Stanford leads the league with a 3-0 record, but the
Cardinal has been trounced by Texas and San Jose State.

2. Peter Warrick, WR/KR, Florida State--The 6-foot, 195-pound
senior doesn't have to worry about buying a suit for the Heisman
Trophy presentation. He's no longer the front-runner for the
award after being charged with third-degree felony grand theft.

3. Louisville's Defense--While the Cardinals' offense averages
493.5 yards per game, second highest in the nation, their
defense surrenders 420.8 yards and is ranked 96th. Last week it
allowed 564 yards in a 59-52 double-overtime loss to Army.

4. Jamie Barnette, QB, North Carolina State--The 6-foot,
196-pound senior entered the season as the Wolfpack's alltime
leader in passing yards (7,141) and touchdown throws (46), but
in six games this fall, he has had six interceptions and six
touchdown passes for an offense averaging just 243.7 yards
and ranked 108th in the nation.

5. Miami--The Hurricanes showed promise in an impressive 23-12
victory over Ohio State in the Kickoff Classic but then
regressed, blowing fourth-quarter leads in losses to Penn State
and East Carolina. Adding insult to injury, Miami was outdueled
by in-state rival Florida State last week and fell to 2-3.

6. Ron Dayne, RB, Wisconsin--The 5'10", 252-pound senior (above)
has rushed for 853 yards, but the Great Dayne hasn't been so
great in the clutch. He fumbled two yards shy of the end zone in
the fourth quarter of a 17-12 defeat at Cincinnati and was held
to zero yards in the second half of the Badgers' 21-16 loss to
Michigan.

7. Virginia--Expected to contend for the ACC title, the
Cavaliers (3-3) are in fourth place after Saturday's 24-17
OT loss to previously winless Duke.

8. DeAngelo Evans, I-back, Nebraska--The 5'9", 215-pound junior
quit the Huskers on Sept. 12, citing a diminished role. The
Cornhuskers miss his me-me-me attitude so much that they're
averaging 265.4 rushing yards per game, fifth best in the nation.

9. West Virginia--Mountaineer fans weren't expecting a Big East
title after losing running back Amos Zereoue, the conference's
alltime leading rusher, to the NFL, but a 1-4 start has West
Virginia in danger of suffering its first losing season since
1995.

10. South Carolina--Granted, nobody believed Lou Holtz would
turn the Gamecocks into a national championship contender this
season, but many observers thought Holtz would turn South
Carolina in the right direction. The Gamecocks (0-6) have shown
few signs of life and own the nation's longest losing streak (16
games).
