Jesper Parnevik, the son of a famed comedian, had the last laugh
at the Hope.
In her 15th LPGA season Nancy Scranton got her second win, at
the Subaru Memorial.

George Archer, 60, won the MasterCard Championship on a pair of
--PGA Tiger Woods will play in four straight tournaments starting
with next week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and at the
second event--the Buick Invitational--Woods's schoolboy pal, Bryon
Bell, will caddie for him, just as he did last year when Woods
got the first of his eight 1999 victories.... Parnevik, who tied
for sixth at the Mercedes Championships and for third at the Sony
Open, has been under par in his last eight rounds. For the year
he has a 68.31 scoring average.... Craig Stadler was pushing 300
pounds before losing about 40 in the last two months. He wants to
drop 30 more.... Aaron Baddeley, Greg Norman, Curtis Strange and
Tom Watson were given special exemptions for the June 15-18 U.S.
Open at Pebble Beach.... The Open will return to Pinehurst No. 2
--LPGA Scranton, who ranked 123rd on tour in putting last year,
averaged only 27 putts per round during the Memorial, third best
in the field.... The USGA gave Pat Bradley and Nancy Lopez the
wave into the July 20-23 Women's Open at the Merit Club outside
--SENIOR Jack Nicklaus, who finished 19 strokes behind Archer in
34th place, made two triple bogeys and shot 80 last Saturday,
his worst round in 11 years as a senior.... Archer has won
tournaments in five decades.
--ALSO Michael Campbell, a Kiwi who won the New Zealand Open on
the second hole of a playoff against Craig Perks of New Zealand,
is first on both the Australasian and European tour money
lists.... The South African Open, first played in 1863 and the
world's second-oldest tournament (the British Open debuted in
1860), went to Mathias Gronberg of Sweden, who beat Darren
Fichardt, Ricardo Gonzalez and Nick Price by one shot.
