COLOR PHOTO: MICHAEL QUARTERMAN Mohini Bhardwaj, Cincinnati Gymnastics Bhardwaj, a junior at UCLA, won the all-around and the uneven bars and tied for first on the balance beam to lead the No. 2 Bruins to the NCAA region 1 women's championships. She also won the all-around and the vault at the Pac-10 meet as UCLA took the conference title.

CARTER SMITH Steve Gerberman, Missouri City, Texas Fencing Steve, 16, outdueled 153 rivals to get the gold medal in the cadet men's foil (under 17) division and 177 other competitors to win the gold in the junior men's foil (under 20) at the Junior Olympics. In January he was second at the world Cadet Cup in Koblenz, Germany.

Baseball Robbie, a junior catcher at Newport High, went 4 for 5 and hit a solo, a two-run, a three-run and a grand slam homer in a 27-7 victory over Bald Knob High. Through Sunday he led the 8-5 Greyhounds in RBIs with 20 and was batting .375 with five home runs.

Track and Field Blackwell, 41, a cardiovascular surgeon, set a world record for the 400 meters in the men's 40-44 age group (49.40) at the Masters indoor championships. He also ran a leg on the winning Sprint Force America 4x400 relay team, whose 3:31.04 was also an age-group world record.

College, was named the Midwest Conference Swimmer of the Year for the third time in four years. At the league championships he won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle and the 200 individual medley, and swam a leg on the winning 4x400 relay.

Hockey Matt, a junior center at Ithaca High, had a natural hat trick in only 46 seconds during the first period of a 4-0 victory over Saratoga High to lead the Little Red to the Division 1 state championship. He finished the season with 21 goals and 19 assists for 26-3 Ithaca High.
