The Week April 25-May 1

Crossing Pattern
If Craig Stadler can get into a playoff putting cross-handed,
think what you could do.

Sophie's Choice
Four over after seven on Sunday, Gustafson didn't tank. She
rallied for her first win.

Closing Time
Stads, take notes: John Jacobs eagled to force a tie, then won
on the first extra hole.

Spain Man
Ollie? Sergio? Seve? Nope. A Brit, 25-year-old Brian Davis, won
the Spanish Open.

PGA The Robert Allenby-Stadler playoff, won by Allenby on the
fourth hole, was the 18th in Houston, two more than at any other
Tour event.... Last year Allenby was in the gallery of childhood
pal Stuart Appleby when he won the tournament. Appleby missed the
cut last week but hung around the TPC at The Woodlands to return
the favor.

LPGA Because she stutters badly, Gustafson, 26, had Nancy Lopez
speak for her at the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship awards
ceremony.... Kelly Robbins, who tied Amy Fruhwirth for second a
stroke behind Gustafson, hit her drive on the closing hole into a
water hazard.... Karrie Webb tied for fourth, four shots back.

SENIOR Sixty-year-old George Archer, 11th at the Bruno's Memorial
Classic and 12th on the money list, hopes to become the first
sexagenarian to finish in the top 10 in earnings.... Jacobs won
when Gil Morgan bogeyed the playoff hole.

ALSO Colin Montgomerie has a way with the fans on the continent,
too. During the third round of the Spanish Open, at Girona, he
stormed into the crowd, snatched a camera from a spectator and
gave it to a marshal.... Davis won by three over Markus Brier,
the only Austrian on the European tour.... Jeff Gallagher, 35,
got his second win in eight years on the Buy.com tour, at the
South Carolina Classic in Florence.... Tim Mickelson, Phil's
brother and a senior at Oregon State, finished second at the
Pac-10 Championships, 10 shots behind Paul Casey, the Arizona
State junior who broke Tiger Woods's conference record with a
23-under 265.
