The Week May 2-8

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!
Carlos Franco let the good times roll--again--in New Orleans.

Iron Maiden
Long-hitting Laura Davies didn't pull out the driver all week
but still got her 60th win.

Family Ties
With his 76-year-old dad on his deathbed, Bruce Fleisher
prevailed in overtime.

Net Gain
Colin Montgomerie beat a weak field in the French Open. He'll
have a stiffer test at Wimbledon.

PGA Adios, Dead Zone: Ten of the top 12 players in the World
Ranking signed up for this week's GTE Byron Nelson Classic....
Franco, who defeated Blaine McCallister on the second hole of a
playoff at English Turn, has three Tour victories in the last 12
months. Only Tiger Woods, with 10, has more.... Woods, supporting
a strike by the Screen Actors Guild, refused to film a Nike
commercial.

LPGA Davies beat runner-up Dottie Pepper by two strokes at the
Philips Invitational in Austin but lost $100 on China Visit in
the Kentucky Derby.... Cross Japan off Karrie Webb's to-do list.
She cruised to a nine-shot victory at the Nichirei Cup in Tokyo.

SENIOR Fleisher's father, Herbert, who has pancreatic cancer,
asked Bruce to defend his title at the TPC at Piper Glen in
Charlotte rather than stay with him in Miami.

ALSO The Royal and Ancient Golf Club has told clubmakers that
the extra distance gained from technical advances in drivers is
not in the best interest of the game.... Montgomerie beat
Jonathan Lomas by two shots at Le Golf National outside
Paris.... Chad Campbell, 25, of Andrews, Texas, won for the
fourth time in his last five starts and for the fifth time
overall on the Hooters tour, at the Middle Tennessee Classic in
Lewisburg.... Deane Beman, Sir Michael Bonallack, Jack Burke
Jr., Neil Coles and John Jacobs will be inducted into the World
Golf Hall of Fame on Nov. 20.... Family Golf Centers, the
largest owner of driving ranges in the U.S., with 111 locations,
has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
