The Week May 23-29
Da Man
They call Muirfield Village the Course that Jack Built. Tiger's
Alley would be more appropriate.
Crash Landing
Another bad Trip for a Kuehne: Kelli doubles the last hole, then
loses in a playoff.
2 Bad
Tom Watson, winless in '00, is runner-up for the third time. Who
does he think he is, Avis Love?
Cool 'Cats--Led by Jenna Daniels and Julia Kraschinski, Arizona
routs Stanford by 21 in the NCAAs.
--PGA Woods's five-stroke margin of victory at the Memorial was
his largest since he won by 12 in the '97 Masters.... Woods's
nine-under 63 last Friday marked the 23rd time he has shot 64 or
better since turning pro.... Northwestern junior Luke Donald,
who finished 51st at the Memorial, will defend his NCAA title
this week at Grand National Golf Complex in Opelika, Ala....
After watching Jack and Gary play last Thursday, Barbara
Nicklaus was hospitalized for kidney stones. She was treated on
Friday and returned to the course in time to see both players
make the cut.... Australian amateur Aaron Baddeley has missed
the cut in five of the six Tour events this season.
--LPGA Betsy King birdied the second playoff hole to beat
Kuehne, the defending champ, and Vicki Goetze-Ackerman at the
Corning (N.Y.) Classic. In 24 seasons King, the tour's career
money leader, has earned $6,707,749, almost $1 million more than
No. 2 Beth Daniel.... Because she was seven minutes late for her
1:30 p.m. tee time in the opening round, Mary Lawrence was
disqualified from what would have been her first LPGA start.
--SENIOR Larry Nelson, who beat Watson by three strokes at the
Boone Valley Classic outside St. Louis, passed Bruce Fleisher
for first place on the money list with $1,006,300.
--ALSO Daniels beat Kraschinski by three shots at Crosswater
Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore., to become the fourth Wildcat in 11
years to win the individual title. The others were Susan
Slaughter ('90), Annika Sorenstam ('91) and Marisa Baena
('96).... Colin Montgomerie made three birdies in a row during
his 69 on Monday to win a record third straight Volvo PGA at the
Wentworth Club in England.
