Rowing Read, a senior captain and All-America at Temple, guided the Owls' men's varsity eight team to its 12th straight Dad Vail Regatta crown in a time of 5:43.68, becoming the first rower to stroke a varsity eight to four consecutive victories in that competition.

Soccer Taline, a junior forward at Langley High, scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over McLean High to lead the Saxons to the AAA Patriot District championship for the second time in three years. She led the team with 24 goals and tied for the lead in assists, with 10.
COLOR PHOTO: COUNTRY STUDIO Jessica Zatica, Homedale, Idaho Track and Field Jessica, a senior at Homedale High, won the high jump (5'8") and the 100-meter hurdles (14.79) at the Class A-3 championships for the fourth consecutive year. She also won the triple jump, after only three weeks of competing in that event, and the 300 hurdles.
COLOR PHOTO: TIM KELLY David Zabriskie, Salt Lake City Cycling Zabriskie, 21, won the 25-mile U-23 National Time Trial championship race for the second time in three years. His time of 54:02.9 was more than 90 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. He also finished second overall (first in the under-23 division) at the Redlands Bicycle Classic.

Softball Holly, a junior at Tigerton High, went 4 for 4 and struck out eight batters in a 12-2 win over Iola Scandinavia High to lead the Tigers to the Central Wisconsin Small Division championship. She pitched all 143 innings for Tigerton this season, with a 1.76 ERA and 185 strikeouts.

Judo June, 10, a green belt on the Maryland Judo team, beat Ivy Eaves of Quebec to win the 9-10 age-group title at the 2000 American-Canadian International championships. June is also the reigning junior national champion and Junior Olympics national champion in her sport.
