CARTER SMITH Hal Hudson, Houston Powerlifting Hudson, 63, a lawyer, bench-pressed 248 pounds, deadlifted 473 and squatted 391 to win the 60-64 division of the U.S. Masters Powerlifting Championships, his 15th masters title. Beginning in 1979 he has won at least one National Masters crown in four different decades.

Softball Tia, a senior at Mater Dei High, was named the Gatorade girls' national high school player of the year in her sport after giving up only one earned run and going 30-2 with an 0.03 ERA and 389 strikeouts in 230 1/3 innings, leading the Monarchs to their third straight CIF Division I championship game.

COLOR PHOTO: CHRISTOPHER MAHARRY Emily Edwards, Des Moines Lacrosse Emily, a senior attackman and All-America at the Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., scored six goals and added two assists in a 12-10 victory over Phillips Andover to lead the 14-0 Seawolves to the New England championship. She will attend Berkeley in the fall.

COLOR PHOTO: PHYLLIS GRABER JENSEN Pablo Pizarro, La Serena, Chile Tennis Pablo, a senior exchange student at Gardiner (Maine) High, defeated No. 1 seed Todd Spelman of York High 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals and second-seeded Pat Cianciolo of Gorham High 7-6, 6-4 in the final to win the boys' state high school singles championship.

Soccer Leigh, an eighth-grader at the Maclay School who plays for the Maclay varsity, scored nine goals over a four-game span, including four goals and an assist in a 10-0 game over Taylor County to help the Marauders win the District 2 title and finish the season 25-3-1.

COLOR PHOTO: MARK ROWE PHOTOGRAPHY Jamie Brewster, Providence Track and Field Brewster, a senior at Colby College, won the hammer throw with a toss of 193'4" at the NCAA Division III championships for the third time in four years. He was also a champion in that event at this year's New England Division III championships with a throw of 192'4".
