CARTER SMITH Hal Hudson, Houston Powerlifting Hudson, 63, a lawyer, bench-pressed 248 pounds, deadlifted 473 and squatted 391 to win the 60-64 division of the U.S. Masters Powerlifting Championships, his 15th masters title. Beginning in 1979 he has won at least one National Masters crown in four different decades.

Softball Tia, a senior at Mater Dei High, was named the Gatorade girls' national high school player of the year in her sport after giving up only one earned run and going 30-2 with an 0.03 ERA and 389 strikeouts in 230 1/3 innings, leading the Monarchs to their third straight CIF Division I championship game.
