The Week July 4-10
Extra Special
How to beat Tiger Woods? Put him in a playoff with Robert
Allenby, who's 6-0 in them.
Harry Karrie
Ms. Webb better get a move on. Annika Sorenstam now has as many
W's (four) this year.
Hit and Myth
If the geezer tour's a putting contest, why can't Isao Aoki beat
Leonard Thompson?
Two-Timed
Like Notah Begay, Lee Westwood wins two straight and everyone
wants to talk about Tiger.
--PGA Before Nick Price, who went down on the first extra hole at
the Advil Western Open outside Chicago, Allenby had beaten Wayne
Grady (1993 Optus Players), Miguel Angel Jimenez ('94 Honda
Open), Miguel Angel Martin ('96 British Masters), Bernhard Langer
('96 French Open) and Craig Stadler ('00 Houston Open) in
playoffs....Along with top-ranked Woods, David Duval (second),
Westwood (fourth), Greg Norman (40th) and Jose Maria Olazabal
(51st) may also skip January's Andersen Consulting World Match
Play.
--LPGA Sorenstam, who made an 11-foot birdie putt on the second
playoff hole to beat Rachel Hetherington at the Jamie Farr
Kroger Classic in Sylvania, Ohio, has won the last three
tournaments in the Buckeye state.
--SENIOR Thompson's win in the State Farm Classic, in Columbia,
Md., also came in overtime. He birdied the second extra hole to
defeat Aoki--again. Thompson's only other Senior victory, the
'98 Coldwell Banker Burnet Classic, came when he beat Aoki on
the second hole of a playoff.
--ALSO Westwood, who successfully defended his European Open title
with a one-shot victory over Angel Cabrera at the K Club in
County Kildare, Ireland, has three victories and three top fives
in his last six starts....Catherine Cartwright, 17, defeated
Russamee Gulyanamitta 3 and 1 at Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen,
N.C., to become the youngest winner ever of the U.S. Women's
Public Links....Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz, on the
disabled list after ligament transplant surgery in his right
elbow, tied for seventh in the American Century Celebrity
Championship in South Lake Tahoe.
