The Week July 11-17

Old Glory
What's more impressive, Loren Roberts's 260 in Milwaukee or the
age--45--at which he shot it?

Merit-ocracy
There are now five good reasons that Annika Sorenstam should be
favored at this week's U.S. Open.

Stare Master
Raymond Floyd must be working out. Even at 57 he has an eye for
the prize.

Bum Loch
Think bridesmaid of the year Ernie Els would trade two wins in
Glasgow for one in St. Andrews?

--PGA Roberts, who beat Franklin Langham by eight shots in the
Greater Milwaukee Open at Brown Deer Park, is the oldest player
to win a Tour event since Tom Watson won the 1998 Colonial when
he was 48.... The Boss of the Moss led the field with 108
putts.... Frank Lickliter fanned on a four-incher in the second
round, which ultimately cost him $15,417.... The Tour says the
R&A has agreed to hold a British Open qualifier in the U.S. next
year.

--LPGA Sorenstam earned her second straight victory and her
fifth of the year with a one-stroke win over Rosie Jones at the
Japan Airlines Big Apple Classic at Wykagyl Country Club in New
Rochelle, N.Y.... Sorenstam jumped over Juli Inkster and Pat
Bradley to third in career earnings, with $5,781,283.

--SENIOR Floyd's one-shot win over Larry Nelson and Dana Quigley
at the Ford Senior Players Championship at the TPC of Michigan,
in Dearborn, was his first victory since the '96 Players....
This week's Instinet Classic in Princeton, N.J., will be the
1,000th PGA Tour/Senior tour event of Arnold Palmer's career. He
joins Miller Barber, Gay Brewer and Dave Eichelberger as the
only members of the 1,000 club.

--ALSO Els edged Tom Lehman by a shot at Loch Lomond when Lehman
bogeyed the 72nd hole.... The 205-yard 17th hole was aced on
consecutive shots, by Jarmo Sandelin in the final group of the
third round and by Mathias Gronberg in the first group of the
final round.... D.J. Trahan, a sophomore at Clemson, defeated
Florida sophomore Bubba Dickerson in 37 holes in the final of
the U.S. Public Links at Heron Lakes in Portland.
