The Week July 18-24
History Major
So much for the prelims. The Grand Slam is the ultimate prize,
and Tiger knows it.
Brad Karma
We can think of 155 others who should've headed to the B.C. Open
with Brad Faxon.

If Woods maintains his current pace (21 Tour victories in 84
starts), he'll break Sam Snead's alltime mark of 81 wins in
2012, when he's 36. Tiger's also on track to win a record 19th
major in 2015.... More Woods: He won the British by eight
strokes with a 19-under 269, the lowest score ever, in relation
to par, in a major. He is the first person since Jack Nicklaus,
in '72, to be the reigning champ in three majors. In completing
the career Grand Slam, Tiger had an average margin of victory of
nine shots. (Nicklaus won by 2.4 strokes in his 18 majors.)....
Ernie Els, who tied for second at St. Andrews with Thomas Bjorn,
is the first player to be the runner-up in three straight majors
in the same season.... After failing to qualify for the British
Open on July 17, Faxon flew from Scotland to Endicott, N.Y.,
where he became the first repeat winner in the B.C. Open's
28-year history. Faxon shot an 18-under 270 at En-Joie Golf
Course for a one-shot victory over Esteban Toledo.
--LPGA
Karrie Webb's five-stroke win over Cristie Kerr and Meg Mallon
in the U.S. Open was her fifth victory of the year and made her,
at 25, the youngest person to qualify for the LPGA Hall of
Fame.... Webb, who has 21 W's in 112 starts, is on pace to break
Kathy Whitworth's record of 88 wins in 2015, when she's 40....
Naree Wongluekiet, 14, finished 40th and was the low amateur.
--SENIOR
Morgan won the Instinet Classic at the TPC at Jasna Polana in
Princeton, N.J., by four shots over Bruce Fleisher and Bob Murphy.
--ALSO
Ben Crane, a 24-year-old Monday qualifier from Beaverton, Ore.,
won the Buy.com Wichita Open with a tournament-record 25-under
263.... Aree Wongluekiet, Naree's twin, became the youngest
winner in the 33-year history of the Junior World Championships.
She won by 10 shots with an 11-under 285 on the North Course at
Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif.
