Highlights
SATURDAY 8/26
Little League World Series
ABC 4:30 PM
Cal Ripken World Series
FOX SPORTS NET 5 PM (SUNDAY)
Here, then, are the true boys of summer. This year the Babe Ruth
League renamed its 12-and-under division after Ripken, who will
play a 1:35 game on Sunday and then join the broadcasters of the
kids' game, to be held in Mattoon, Ill., from the Camden Yards
press box. A little Little League note: Former Little League
World Series star Sean Burroughs, who led Long Beach, Calif., to
the title in 1992 and '93, was MVP of the Futures Game during
All-Star weekend last month in Atlanta.
SUNDAY 8/27
Penn State versus Southern Cal
ABC 2:30 PM "I'm a walking contradiction," says Southern Cal
second-string tailback Petros Papadakis, in reference to his
being an introspective football player and a Greek Trojan. "I
can sit on the fence and watch myself go by." Papadakis expects
to watch as speedy teammates Sultan McCullough (tailback) and
Kareem Kelly (wideout) go by a Nittany Lions defense that must
replace nine starters, including the top two picks in the NFL
draft.
MONDAY 8/28
Battle at Bighorn
ABC 8 PM Next week, Monday Night Football. This week, Monday
night golf, as Al Michaels hosts a $1.5 million match-play duel
between Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods. While Woods's resume is
unassailable, Garcia is ranked 15th in the world. Somewhere
Ernie Els is having a good pout, and we don't blame him.
Don't Miss
SATURDAY 8/26
Dodgers at Cubs
FOX 1 PM Taking its cue from Michael J., Fox is going back to
the future. To commemorate the 61st anniversary of major league
baseball's first televised game (Dodgers versus Reds, at Ebbets
Field), today's broadcast will be a tour through the last six
decades of televised baseball coverage. For example, the first
inning will be aired 1939 style, in black and white with only
two cameras and one announcer, Joe Buck, who will sit in the
stands. Graphics will be introduced in the third inning (early
'50s), color and color man Tim McCarver in the fourth (late
'50s) and slow-motion replays in the sixth ('70s). What happens
if the game goes extra innings? Our futuristic guess is that
you'll be able to see it only on pay-per-view.
ALL TIMES EASTERN. SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

THE ZAPPER
You're nobody, networkwise, until you have a Muhammad Ali
special. HBO airs the documentary Ali-Frazier: One
Nation...Divisible on Saturday (10:15 a.m) and again on
Wednesday (4 p.m.), while Fox counters with their two-hour
biopic, Ali: An American Hero, on Thursday at 8 p.m. Meanwhile,
NBC will offer a view of the Greatest as seen through an Olympic
prism with Twice Born, a documentary narrated by Bob Costas that
is scheduled to air on Sept. 30, the penultimate night of the
Sydney Games. No word yet on whether Nick at Nite has a Kukla,
Fran and Ali special on tap.
