Cross-country Torres, a sophomore at Colorado, won the Iowa State Pre-National Invitational 10-km in 30:31, 17 seconds better than the time of Stanford senior Thomas Murley. Torres, who earlier this fall took the Rocky Mountain Shootout 8-km in 25:24, also led the Buffaloes' men to the team title.

He'll play for Texas next year.
COLOR PHOTO: JIM LUZZI Melissa Macomber, VIRGINIA BEACH Field Hockey Macomber, a sophomore forward at Columbia, scored twice to help the Lions overcome a 2-0 deficit in the final 18:10 and beat Brown 3-2 for Columbia's first conference road win in four seasons of playing the sport. Macomber is second on the team with 11 goals in 14 games this year.
COLOR PHOTO: JIM MIDGETT Genius Chidzikwe, MUTARE, ZIMBABWE Tennis Chidzikwe, a junior at SMU, won the ITA Men's All-American singles championship--the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam--by beating Duke senior Marko Cerenko 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final. Chidzikwe, a member of Zimbabwe's Davis Cup team, is 8-1 this fall.

Soccer Kazakos, 53, the coach at Freedom Senior High in Bethlehem, got his 300th career victory when his Patriots defeated Allen High of Allentown 3-1. Kazakos coached Freedom to a state title in his rookie season of 1983 and has also won 10 league crowns.

Hockey Haydar, a junior forward at New Hampshire, was the MVP of the Ice Breaker Tournament after getting three goals and two assists in two games. Haydar got the game-tying goal with 8:59 remaining in the semifinal against North Dakota and then scored twice in a 7-3 defeat of Colgate in the final.
