Drive for Show The putt-putts are for the dough at Pebble Beach's Concours d'Elegance

With all due respect to Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger
Woods, there's making history and there's making history. The
Concours d'Elegance at Pebble Beach, which each year since 1950
has married the world's finest rebuilt classic automobiles and
the world's finest golf setting, is the one day at Pebble when
Jaguars draw more oh my's than Tigers and Bears. Fanned out
along the famed par-5 18th hole, these wheels of fortune give
new meaning to the phrase nice drive.

The organizers of this year's Concours, held in late summer,
celebrated the show's golden anniversary by showcasing 20 of the
50 past best-in-show winners. In addition, 130 restored cars were
judged in 25 classes--such as Antique Through 1911 and Rolls-Royce
Prewar--based on historical authenticity and (let's not kid
ourselves) style. Jacques Harguindeguy, of Walnut Creek, Calif.,
whose dark-red-and-gray 1937 Delahaye Figoni et Falaschi
Cabriolet joined the best-in-show pantheon, researched the car
for two years before sending it to a professional restoration
company, which took 14 months to complete the project. "The most
important thing is that the car stand out, and it does," he says.
"It's very exotic-looking."
