Vincente Fernandez, the lowest seed in the field, goes all the
way in the Silly Season's lid-lifter.

--PGA Mike Weir put two balls in the water at the 17th, a 536-yard
par-5, on Friday and made an 8, yet still shot an 11-under 277 to
win the American Express Championship by two strokes over Lee
Westwood.... In the next three weeks Woods is scheduled to log
1,580 more miles than the circumference of the Earth, traveling
from Spain to this week's Johnnie Walker Classic in Bangkok and
then to the Nov. 21-22 Grand Slam of Golf in Kauai, Hawaii, the
Nov. 30-Dec. 3 Williams World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif.,
and finally to the Dec. 7-10 EMC World Cup in Buenos Aires before
returning home to Orlando.... Casey Martin, who finished 179th on
this year's money list, advanced from the second to the final
stage of Q school, Nov. 29-Dec. 4 at PGA West in La Quinta,
Calif.... NCAA champ Charles Howell, who didn't make it past the
second stage, will team up with Adam Scott of Australia at this
week's Shark Shootout at Miami's Doral Resort and Spa.... The
average age of the top 15 Buy.com tour players this year is
32.6.

--LPGA The Aug. 16-19 Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open,
near Toronto, and the Sept. 7-9 Williams Championship in Tulsa
are the second and third new events on next year's schedule.

--SENIOR Fernandez beat Leonard Thompson with a birdie on the
19th hole to win the Chrysler Senior Match Play Championship and
$240,000, his largest paycheck ever.
